Maritime organizations and manning agencies design programs and offer welfare services to help seafarers and their families sustain their repeated separations. In sharing their efforts to safeguard migrants' and their families' well- being, a practitioner from a maritime organization will highlight the influence of programs and policies on everyday family life.

Seafaring is a precarious profession. With each contract, the seafarer risks not only his/her physical safety but also his/her mental health. The physical demands and social isolation caused by the repeated departures from home can take its toll on the mental well-being of the seafarer, as well as of those who are left behind. Beginning with a simple Kumusta? (How are you?), speakers will offer information on what to look out and where can we seek assistance.
*Kumusta Kabaro? (How are you Mate?) is the mental health awareness program of the GOLD Foundation.

Because seafarers' partners play a significant role in the families' well-being and the seafarers' maritime career, it is important that sea-based migrants and their partners understand the expectations, responsibilities and burdens of those entrusted with the family's daily welfare.

The goal of this session is for the members of the seafarer families to have a better understanding and appreciation of their unique family set-up and the challenges they face. This session will also discuss their repeatedly changing family arrangements and how family members can see themselves playing pivotal roles in adapting to the shifting tides of family life.

While we are all enamored by the benefits of the digital world, we must be reminded by the fundamental connections of society: the family. Gig and the Amazing Sampaguita Foundation Inc. (GASFI) emphasizes the benefits of reading at bedtime on migrant family bonds and literacy of family members. With the digital platforms available to seafarer families, we explore the role of these technological advancements in building family relations and reinforcing everyday practices.
